Abstract: Between 2015 and 2024, Ryanair's entry into the Autonomous Region of the Azores profoundly transformed air connectivity and the profile of island tourism. This study, with a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational approach, analyses the effects of this change in five strategic dimensions: air traffic, tourism performance, resident mobility, economic impact, and risk of dependency. Using annual data from SREA, INE, ANAC, and Turismo dos Açores, it was possible to verify a 167% growth in the number of passengers landing in São Miguel, a 262% increase in the number of guests, and more than €100 million in additional tourism revenue on the islands where Ryanair operates. The correlation between passengers and overnight stays (r = 0.991; p < 0.01) demonstrates a statistically significant link between air accessibility and tourism performance. At the same time, structural vulnerabilities are identified, such as the concentration of supply in two airports and the risk of excessive dependence on a single carrier. The results suggest that, although Ryanair's operation has boosted regional development, its presence raises strategic challenges in terms of sustainability, territorial equity, and long-term resilience.
