Research Design - The New Perspective of Research Methodology

Title: Research Design - The New Perspective of Research Methodology
Authors: Silva, Carla
Abstract: This article aims to demonstrate a possible relationship between quantitative methodology and
qualitative methodology. It is know the eternal conflict between the two thematic areas; however
researchers support a conceptual methodology that links the two methods under a theoretical and
conceptual framework designed by the research problem. Research in education cannot ignore the
frameworks that outline and contribute increasingly to the quantitative and qualitative approaches in
the approximation of the study object. In this article the researchers build a methodological design,
providing a comprehensive and coherent strategic framework, based on the epistemological ideals
of a conceptual framework, outlining goals and general hypotheses. It is important to see and have
a distant view of the near things that are close to us and contain a broad but close view of things.
Get an idea and overview through a distant point and get a distance from a particular perspective,
is the basis of our methodological research. Considering alternatives and methodology choices, led
us to underline the existing advantages and disadvantages of quantitative and qualitative data. The
approach itself is pragmatic because some issues that arise can be of quantitative research and
other qualitative research. If researchers want to understand how is represented socially and
culturally our object of study, they must consider their stories, but also a multifaceted study that
requires a statistical understands.

Title: DuinoBlocks4Kids: Utilizando Tecnologia Livre e Materiais de Baixo Custo para o Exercício do Pensamento Computacional no Ensino Fundamental I por meio do Aprendizado de Programação Aliado à Robótica Educacional

A Cross-analysis of Block-based and Visual Programming Apps with Computer Science Student-Teachers

Title: A Cross-analysis of Block-based and Visual Programming Apps with Computer Science Student-Teachers
Authors: Piedade, João; Pedro, Ana; Sampaio, Fábio Ferrentini; Dorotea, Nuno
Abstract: Abstract: In the last few years, it has been pointed out that teaching programming is a strong
strategy to develop pupils’ competences in computational thinking (CT). In the Portuguese context,
the curriculum changes in 2018 made programming and CT compulsory for every pupil in primary
and secondary education. Nowadays, there is an information and communication technology (ICT)
subject, taught by a computer science teacher in each school grade. In Portugal, to become a
computer science teacher in primary and secondary education, it is compulsory to have a master’s
degree in computer science education. This article reports on a pedagogical activity developed with
student-teachers of a Master in Teaching Informatics at the University of Lisbon. Within the
activities of the master’s program, we developed a cross-analysis of the core characteristics of 26
block-based and visual programming applications (apps) used to teach computational thinking and
programming in school classes. In order to organize the analysis, a framework with several
dimensions was developed and used by student-teachers to register the characteristics of each app.
The product of this work is a comparative matrix mapping the core characteristics of each of the 26
apps that student-teachers used to select the most appropriate one for teaching programming and
computational thinking according to each grade, age group and other characteristics.

The Impact of Perioperative Data Science in Hospital Knowledge Management

Title: The Impact of Perioperative Data Science in Hospital Knowledge Management
Authors: Baptista, Márcia; Vasconcelos, José Braga; Rocha, Álvaro; Silva, Rita; Carvalho, João Vidal; Jardim, Helena Gonçalves; Quintal, António
Abstract: Conservative practices, such as manual registry have limited scope regarding preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative
decision making, knowledge discovery, analytical techniques and knowledge integration into patient care.
To maximize quality and value, perioperative care is changing through new technological developments. In this
context, knowledge management practices will enable future transformation and enhancements in healthcare services.
By performing a data science and knowledge management research in the perioperative department at Hospital Dr.
Nélio Mendonça between 2013 and 2015, this paper describes its principal results. This study showed perioperative
decision-making improvement by integrating data science tools on the perioperative electronic system (PES). Before
the PES implementation only 1,2% of the nurses registered the preoperative visit and after 87,6% registered it.
Regarding the patient features it was possible to assess anxiety and pain levels. A future conceptual model for
perioperative decision support systems grounded on data science should be considered as a knowledge management
tool.
