Abstract: O padrão de crescimento e o estado nutricional são um importante indicador de saúde e bem-estar, em crianças e adolescentes, testemunhando as condições de vida às quais estão submetidos. O crescimento do corpo humano é um  processo complexo e não linear, com diferentes velocidades durante as várias fases da vida, considerando-se os primeiros anos de vida como um dos períodos mais vulnerável. Durante o crescimento e maturação regista-se um aumento do volume múscilo-esquelético e, na adolescência, um aumento do teor de gordura corporal, particularmente na rapariga. Determinantes biológicos, tais como a constituição genética, o sexo, o ambiente intrauterino, a estatura dos pais mas também factores ambientais, nomeadamente sócio-económico-culturais e nutricionais, influenciam este processo individual.</description>

Abstract: A full list of all Portuguese private and public&#xD;
primary schools (N=6810) was provided by the &#xD;
Ministry of Education. A simple random two-stage&#xD;
sampling was applied and a nationally&#xD;
representative sample was drawn, with schools as &#xD;
the first unit of sampling. 189 schools were &#xD;
selected. Data from first and second graders(6A8&#xD;
years old) from 181 primary schools of the seven &#xD;
geographical regions of Portugal (North, Centre,&#xD;
Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Alentejo, Algarve, Azores&#xD;
and Madeira) were collected.</description>
